Olympic Bronze Medalists at NOX

On November 16, 2024, athletes from all over Ontario gathered in Markham, Ontario, Canada to “Grace/Ariel Kata Experience.” This is Ariel Torres Gutierrez fourth visit to Markham. Gutierrez is the only athletes in the Americas to earn a medal at the Tokyo Olympics. His training partner, Grace Lau also won bronze in the same Tokyo event for females contributing the countries best results at the time. As this was Lao’s first visit to Canada, she was well received by Markham’s cultural diverse community. Greeted in her own tongue by the many Cantonese speaking expats, she seemed well at ease.

Homage: Yagi Meitetsu O’Sensei

“Nothing worthy has ever been achieved with perseverance. Endure. Always endure.”

These were one of many mottos Meitetsu O’Sensei shared in his classes. It was his way of saying don’t give up. If so and so can do it, so can you. O’Sensei passed away on June 29th, 2024. His birth certificate says January 1, 1949 but the exact date is actually unknown since Okinawa was still rebuilding after the Battle of Okinawa and WWII. As a result, the date is a clerical misnomer due to the record keeping standards of the time. Growing up in post WWII Naha, he witnessed the redevelopment of Okinawa from poverty to a thriving modern city as well as the evolution of Okinawa Karate.

Rising Star

All of our journeys begin with the first step. It may seem easy for some but for others stepping out of one’s comfort zone is an enormous challenge. Our youngest athlete Nolan, competed in the U12 elite in the Karate Ontario Team Trials 2 on Sunday, October 23rd. He is only 9 years old competing in a division for up to 11. Just learning Anan Dai a few weeks prior, he was already nervous. While many of us are concerned about medals, we were only concerned that he finishes the division.

Noah Rises To All Challenges

Representing his nation and all of his Senseis, he competed in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham this past summer. He was joined by his Club Seiryu teammate Zachary Chin. As they are both in the same division, the biggest fear would be that they have to eventually compete against each other. They were in separate pools at the start of the tournament. As fate would have it, they both made it to the bronze medal round. Unlike in nationals where they were in different pools the entire time, in Birmingham, they had a face off together for bronze in their final round. Because of this, only one Canadian would bring home a medal. Both chose Suparimpe. The highest level kata in the Goju Ryu system. On this day, Noah took the match for the bronze.
