What is Club Seiryu

Club Seiryu is the sport karate team of NOX Dojo. It is run by the parents of the athletes and volunteers. With its own governance, it has a separate membership and training fees. NOX Dojo sponsors the team by providing training space and schedule. Therefore Club Seiryu members must also have a membership with NOX Dojo.

There are two streams of competition. These are Recreational and Elite. Recreation is centred around learning about sportsmanship and how to compete. Elite is about learning how to make podium and eventually the national team.

Frequently Asked Question

Q: I am a beginner. Can I start competing or is it just for black belts?

  • A: The earlier you start, the better. There are beginner divisions which will means, everyone starts at the same level. If you begin competing at black belt, it means some of your competitors would already have at least four years of competition experience ahead of you. Even at black belt, you can still enjoy the recreational level since the focus is on fun.

Q: How much does it cost?

  • A: There are several different fees involved in being a part of Club Seiryu. They are as follows:

    • All athletes must be a member of NOX Dojo. (Annual surcharge for non-members are $399)

    • Training Fees: Recreational $295/season | Elite $350/season

    • Club Dues: Approximately $100 (A portion or all is refunded at the end of the year)

    • Association Fees: Karate Ontario = $50 and AAU = $50 Approximate

    • Tournament Fees: Budget $100 - $120 per event (Up To 8 events per year)

    • Travel Expenses: Gas and Hotel

    • Coaches travel expenses = $350/person per international event (Elite A). Each additional sibling is $150.

  • Q: Can anyone compete?

  • A: If you or your child have a natural ability for karate, you might be approached by the coach to give it try. Competitive sport however, including Karate, is not for everyone. In addition to natural talent, the athlete must be willing to put in the extra work and enjoy challenging themselves.

  • Q: Is there an unhealthy attitude towards competition?

  • A: Yes. It is unhealthy to enter competition if you only compete to win. While aiming for the podium is certainly one of the goals, it comes second to having fun and learning about yourself. All three goals are important. It is prudent to remember that failing to make podium is very much a part of the journey towards winning. It is preferable to aim for personal bests in the recreational league.

  • Q: Do I have to compete in every event?

  • A: If you are focussed on provincial and national status, a high competition frequency makes a better athlete. If however, these aren’t your goals, then competing at your own leisure is recommended.

  • Q: Where are the events for recreational league?

  • A: For AAU, it is in Chicago, Illinois and Florida. For Karate Ontario, they are within a 2 hour drive from Markham. This year they are in Burlington, Vaughn, Markham, and Brampton. AAU has a high quality of athletes in the recreational league and is highly recommended.

  • Q: How often do you train for competition?

  • A: In addition to regular classes, there are sport karate classes on Wednesdays at 6:00pm and Fridays at 5:00pm (Recreational).

  • Q: Are there any rules for parents?

  • A: Everyone involved to Club Seiryu must abide by our Code of Conduct. Along with our athlete’s code of conduct, there is a parental code of conduct and discipline document. These can be found in or portal page.

  • Q: When is the AGM?

  • A: 2024 AGM is scheduled for September 27, 2024. Nominations for the positions of President, Secretary, Treasurer, Team Manager, and Event Co-ordinator will be established at first team meeting on September 13, 2024.
