Rules of Competition

Rule One – Safety
All athletes must come prepared with their own gloves, mouthguards, groincups (men) and helmets. Chest protectors, shin, and footgear are optional. Any unruly or dangerous action during or outside of the bout or competition area may cause the disqualification of the athlete or in excessive cases – the entire team.

Rule Two – Sportsmanship
This is a recreational event. Therefore regardless of placement, we endeavor to make this a fun event for all athletes. In addition, all athletes must demonstrate fair play and consideration of all competitors.

Rule Three – Challenge
Kata – Unless where Kaiha differences apply, all athletes will be judged on 9 of the 10 WKF kata criteria. These are:
1. A realistic demonstration of the Kata meaning.
2. Understanding of the techniques being used (BUNKAI).
3. Good timing, rhythm, speed, balance, and focus of power (KIME).
4. Correct and proper use of breathing as an aid to KIME.
5. Correct focus of attention (CHAKUGAN) and concentration.
6. Correct stances (DACHI) with proper tension in the legs, and feet flat on the floor.
7. Proper tension in the abdomen (HARA) and no [inadvertent] bobbing up and down of the hips when moving.
8. Correct form (KIHON) of the style being demonstrated.
9. The performance should also be evaluated with a view to discerning other points such as the difficulty of the kata presented.

Kumite – This is an under-black belt and junior black belt competition. The object is to be the first to score 6 points within a 90 second bout. If no one reaches 6 points, the athlete with the highest score is the winner. No contact to the head, face, or neck is permitted but a point can be awarded if technique is executed properly within less that 1 inch of these areas. Permitted targets are based on WKF Kumite rules. These are:
a) Head (no contact)
b) Face (no contact)
c) Neck (no contact)
d) Abdomen
e) Chest
f) Back (but not spine)
g) Side

In addition, the criteria for a proper technique is also define by the WKF as:
a) Good form
b) Sporting attitude
c) Vigorous application
d) Awareness (ZANSHIN)
e) Good timing
f) Correct distance

The Awarding Points – Points are awarded when a properly executed technique is scored on a designated target. Points are awarded as follows:

1 Point: Any properly executed punch on a designated target
2 Points: Any properly executed kick on a designated target

Penalties
Warning: A first incident where a technique is imposed on an opponent that is deemed potentially dangerous or excessive. (i.e. contact to the head or other non-designated target)

1 Point Awarded to Opponent: Where a second incident in the same bout occurs when a technique is imposed on an opponent that is deemed potentially dangerous or excessive.

Disqualification: There are 2 occasions where disqualifications a applicable. These are:
Where an individual would cause any incident that is deemed dangerous and unruly causing deliberate harm or injury to a person and prestige of the event.
Where a third incident occurs in the same bout when a technique is imposed on an opponent that is deemed potentially dangerous or excessive.

Please Note: Force is not a criteria for a point award. Rather, athletes are rewarded for their effort of poise, timing, distancing, accuracy, and speed.
